Welcome to the GatherNearby blog

We started GatherNearby with a stubborn belief: that the most interesting things happening near you are not on a screen. They are in a ceramics studio three blocks away, a Tuesday-night run club that meets at the same lamppost every week, a sourdough class above a bakery you have walked past a hundred times.

This blog is where we will write about that — the people hosting those gatherings, the neighborhoods they happen in, and what we are learning while building a better way to find them.

Why we are doing this

The research on this is not subtle. People are spending more time alone than at almost any point on record, and the casual, low-stakes places we used to bump into each other — the "third places" that are neither home nor work — have been quietly disappearing.

A third place is somewhere you can show up without a reason, leave without an explanation, and still feel like you belong.

We think the antidote is not another feed. It is a pottery wheel, a trailhead, a folding table with name tags. Our job is to make those easy to find and easy to show up to.

What you will find here

We will keep it useful and we will keep it honest. Expect a mix of:

  • City guides — the best recurring classes, clubs, and gatherings in Berkeley, Oakland, and the wider East Bay
  • Host stories — conversations with the teachers and organizers who make a neighborhood feel like one
  • Build notes — what we are shipping, what we got wrong, and what we are figuring out next

Start where it is easiest

If you are new here, the fastest way to feel the point of all this is to go to one thing this week:

  1. Browse what is happening on Explore
  2. Find a recurring class or club that meets near you
  3. Show up once — that is the whole trick

We are glad you are here. More soon.
